Surely we can cook up a better way to celebrate the hard
won lessons that guarantee liberty and justice for all. Celebrations
inspire acts of fellowship, generosity, and good will. They
commemorate the stuff that dreams are made of. Offerings of
food and drink are the fruits that grow from the vines of
celebration. They nourish our bodies and warm our hearts.
Together with our families and our communities, we celebrate
to remember the things that matter the most~ those things
we cannot afford to forget.
It’s not too late to write a recipe for our Martin Luther
King celebration. Dr. King’s freedom speech urges us
to recognize that “now is the time to make real the
promises of democracy….to lift our nation from the quicksands
of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.”
We need to remember that we can all enjoy a piece of the American
Pie. Pie…that’s it! Pie is the classic all American
dessert. Baked in a round pie pan, it deliciously symbolizes
the unified promise of the Whole. Certainly, our history testifies
to our love affair with pie, serving up healthy doses of Mom
and apple pie, George Washington’s cherry pie, and the
first Thanksgiving’s pumpkin pie.
Let’s bring a pie to our Martin Luther King feast this
year. We can call it I Have a Dream Pie. There will be plenty
for all. We can each have a piece of the pie – a la
mode, if we choose, or with a heaping dollop of whipped cream.
Let’s share pie recipes and have contests for the most
delectable pie of the year. Restaurants and cafeterias and
home kitchens can offer their pies of the day. Cooking programs
can sponsor their chefs to share their favorite recipes with
their television audience in the studios and with us, at home.
Later on, when our delicious new ritual is firmly set in place,
we can work on more dinner ideas. But, for now, let’s
pull up our chairs and start with dessert………..how
sweet it is!
