How do the aesthetics of your home make you feel—the colors on your walls, the objects in your kitchen, your favorite chair? What qualities do you notice in the things you love the most? Their shapes, their textures, their stories, their uses? How do our connections with the things (and people!) in our lives nourish and sustain us, especially in difficult times?

This is Color & Coffee. It’s an invitation to sit back, pour yourself a hot cup of coffee, and join me for a 30-minute conversation exploring what I call “art for daily life.”

When the pandemic hit, I was working with my team at LU+CO Studios to launch our debut collection, and social distancing turned everything inside out. Production paused and the pop-up gallery set for late spring was cancelled. But challenges like these also provide fertile ground for new ideas.

Sometimes, it’s all too easy to let the beauty in our lives become “hidden in plain sight.” My goal with LU+CO is not only to make unique products that help artists bring their talents and visions out into the wider community, but to bring people together to share and expand our sense of connection, curiosity, and wonder.

The theme of this first Color & Coffee series is The Hero’s Journey, which takes its name from the paintings that inspired LU+CO’s inaugural home goods collection. In our April salon, I introduced the concept of art for daily life and explored the often overlooked role of color in the world.

On May 27, we’ll dive into the topic of “unsung heroes,” with Journey the leafcutter ant as our tour guide. She and her insect colleagues (who are social distancing on tea towels and cocktail napkins) remind us that we are stronger together. Then on June 24, we’ll reflect on our relationships with Mother Nature, looking into the world of birds and flowers, moon and stars in order to connect with a bigger picture.
