Fellow Color Enthusiasts,

I’m delighted to invite you to be part of Color Impact 2020, a virtual symposium focused on expanding color education for the next generation. Originally a three-day conference at Yale University (postponed to June 2021 due to COVID-19), this one-day event will now take place on Saturday, June 6.

Presented by the Inter-Society Color Council, the symposium will feature a keynote by science writer Philip Ball exploring the topic of color as a thematic axis for interdisciplinary education. Participants will also enjoy a debate contrasting traditional and reformist perspectives on color education, breakout discussions, a panel (hosted by yours truly!), and talks by leading voices in color theory, psychology, and curriculum design. Visit our website for the full schedule and registration page (sliding scale available).

With our world in the midst of unprecedented shifts, I believe that now is a perfect time to pause and consider the role of education today. What lessons have we learned? Which priorities have we neglected? How can we inspire and empower more wellness, collaboration, and thoughtful creativity in our students?

For many years, STEM education has been a top priority, with its focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. While these four disciplines are undoubtedly important, we have turned a blind eye to Art’s fundamental value. I’ve given a lot of thought to a more holistic and dynamic STEAM learning model that recognizes the vital contributions of the arts and humanities: providing explicit vessels for creativity, avenues for empathy and reflection, windows on history and culture, and expressive channels for personal, social, and political identity.

From my perspective, rethinking color education is part and parcel of this STEAM learning model. I have aligned with colleagues in the US and around the globe (AIC) to develop a new initiative that positions color at the intersection of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. At Color Impact 2020, we will be formally launching this project—the Color Literacy Project—and inviting attendees to partner with us in developing and teaching its first experiential learning programs.

I hope you can join us, to help take the pulse of color education today, with a fresh and collaborative eye toward the future.

Yours in color,

Luanne
