Lumberjack Rose

Civilization begins with a rose.
— Gertrude Stein

Lumberjack Rose is a fusion of Gingham-in-Motion and a one-liner doodle drawing of a rose. I’ve been drawing “doodle blooms” for many years as an exercise in spontaneity. From time to time, an especially compelling bloom is layered into a painting. As the layers fuse, a new story takes root. Here, the checkerboard plaid meets the elegant rose.

The color strategy for the series features six chromatic hues from the 21st century color wheel: red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, yellow. Each painting represents one month of the calendar year. As an exercise in color interaction, each hue is mixed with white (March-August), and then with black (September-February).
